When Tatkal Makes Sense
Tatkal is best suited for urgent travel, sudden business trips, medical emergencies abroad, or any situation where you have very little time before you need to travel. It isn't meant to be used simply to skip the regular queue when there's no real urgency, since the fees are significantly higher and the appointment slots are limited. If your travel date allows for it, the normal process is usually the more economical choice.
What the Process Looks Like
A Tatkal application still needs proper documentation, including proof of identity and address, and in many cases a verification certificate. Appointment slots open at a fixed time each day and get booked quickly, so being ready to apply the moment slots open matters. Processing is faster than a normal application, but it still isn't instant, so it helps to apply as soon as you know you need to travel.
- Use Tatkal only when travel dates are genuinely urgent
- Keep identity and address proof documents ready in advance
- Appointment slots open at a fixed time and fill up fast
- Tatkal fees are higher than a normal application
- Processing is quicker but still needs a few working days
